would you let him in
this ragged, unbathed man
this desert wanderer
in tattered rags
who rambles on
without regard to social norms
about some coming saviour
would you throw your coat
around his shoulders,
offer him tea
with honey
would you ask to hear his story?

would you let her in
this unwed teen
with dazed round eyes
and an unlikely explanation
would you let her
babysit your kids
would you offer her
that outgrown crib
a baby shower
love her without judgment?

would you let him in
this ex-convict
so recently imprisoned
now heading right back
for the very same crime
with his back a mess of scars
from beatings
the local children laugh at him
and throw stones
and he counts this as a blessing
would you bring him to church
introduce him to your friends?

would you let him in
this homeless wanderer
this social misfit
with his dirty feet
who speaks openly against
everything that society holds sacred
who befriends the outcasts
and loves the unlovable
he doesn’t seem to care
that he has nothing
or have concern for his next meal
he loves with a wild
and reckless abandon
would you welcome him in
ask him to your table
and break bread with him?

would you let him in?

That is beautiful. It reminds me of the Todd Agnew song, “My Jesus”. It is such a powerful and important message!
